Elizabeth “Betty” Jean Sowell, born Elisabetta J. Schettini on May 20, 1920, to Francisco and Anna (Starace) Schettini in Greenwich Village, NY, died Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at 2am. She graduated from Rutgers University in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. She worked throughout her adult life—during child rearing and into her elder years, primarily as a real estate broker. She was a fiercely independent woman, an accomplished and dedicated watercolor painter, and a lifelong reader who knew how to laugh at herself. At 88, she painted the exterior of her own house, without fanfare. At 96, she still gardened and enjoyed daily walks. She passed that legacy of strength, intelligence, humor, self-sufficiency, and creativity to her two daughters, three granddaughters and her grandson. She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth “Beth” Sowell-Zak of Lincroft, NJ, Nancy Sowell of Cape Cod, MA, her grandchildren Melissa Febos of Brooklyn, NY, Barry Febos of Boone, NC, Leslie Zak of Brooklyn, NY, and Lauren Skrabel of Belle Mead, NJ, and her sister Joan Bitondo of Rockaway, NJ. She is preceded in death by her sister Nina Renaud, her brother Frank Schettini, her sister Rita Seltzer. A memorial service will be held from 2-4pm, Saturday, January 14, 2017.
